M.P.s’ visit to South Africa

Sir,—lt appears from today’s editorial that "The Press” considers it wrong to make some effort to understand more about South Africa. The three men concerned are certainly not fools and so no doubt will learn a lot. Even if they learnt only a little that would be more than could be learnt from the biased reports issued by the news media. An example of this is the suggestion that one has to “beat one’s way to Pretoria.” Any travel agent will tell you that there are no problems in getting there. The news media seems to be far more interested in reporting anything to discredit South Africa, but loath to report anything to South Africa’s

credit, an attitude that does not seem to apply to any other country in the world. No wonder people like Messrs Clarkson and Yardley have trouble in forming unbiased opinions. — Yours, etc., L. R. WILKINSON. February 9, 1983. [We raised no objections to people informing themselves about South Africa. We question only the method and terms. — Editor.]
