Southern Cross sails after delays
A hoped-for 24-hour turnaround for the U.S.N.S. Southern Cross had become more than two days and nights .when she finally sailed for the Antarctic at 6 p.m. yesterday. Every effort had been made to get the Southern Cross on her way back to McMurdo Station as quickly as possible, before the disintegrating ice wharf there broke up more, but the weather and mechanical mishaps intervened. Rough seas, fog. and thick ice meant that the ship was late arriving at Lyttelton from McMurdo on Tuesday. Then, not long after they had started unloading her. watersiders stopped work because of heavy rain. It was then hoped to have the Southern Cross bunkered and on her way by early yesterday morning, but part of the ship's heavy lifting deck gear broke during an extra 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. shift being worked by watersiders on Wednesday evening. It took until yesterday afternoon to repair the damage. The executive administrator of New Zealand affairs with the United States Nval Antarctic Support Force. Mr Trevor Grice, said that every effort had been made to make the turnaround as fast as possible. “Any delays were unavoidable. We were very happy with the cooperation," said Mr Grice.
