Teacher upsets pupils
NZPA Suva The Fiji Education Ministry has replaced a head teacher accused of twisting off part of a pupil’s ear. About 400 pupils, backed by parents, boycotted classes for several hours on Monday at the school in Labasa, on the northern island of Vanua Levu, demanding the removal of the head teacher, Mr Ram Jattan. The Parents and Teachers’ Association’s spokesman. Mr Ram Rattan, said that the head teacher had had police protection for several days because of fears that angry parents would "manhandle" him. The parents and pupils had been complaining for some time about the conduct of Mr Jattan. Their complaints included allegations that he twisted a pupils ear until part of it was tom off, and that he suspended another pupil suspected of stealing 20c. The Education Ministry has appointed an acting head teahcer until the complaints against Mr Jattan are heard.
