Ten N.I. bowls fours in last sixteen
The North Island held a 10 to six advantage over the South when the last 16 teams were found yesterday in the fours at the Bell Tea national women’s bowls tournament in Christchurch.
It was a long day for the survivors. Three 21-end games were played, some players being on the green for more than 10 hours.
Today the . singles begin and it will not be until Sunday morning that the fours will be resumed at the Linwood headquarters. The 16 skips who will be back in action then are Shirley Fowler (Tawa), Ev Gilmore (Timaru), Jean Ryan
(Onehunga), Lex Kimber (Linwood), Jean Callister (Tainui), Jean Moffat (Avondale), Betty Fitzell (Matamata), Nell Baker (Auckland Women’s) Iris Revie (Woodlands), Dawn Garrett (Upper Hutt). Ann Katavich (Point Wells), Flo McKinnon (Whangarei), who is the title-holder. Joyce Osborne (Manawatu), Rhoda Ryan (Matamata), Peg Sheard (Fendalton) and Victoria Burn (Cobden). Mrs Burn caused the biggest upset yesterday. She got home in a tight third round game against the New Zealand representative, Jenny Simpson (Matamata). The strong Matamata club
still has two teams left, those skipped by Mrs Fitzell and Rhoda Ryan. Mrs Ryan's opponent in the last round was Cis Winstanley (Marewa), who was chasing her eighth national fours title. Mrs Winstanley looked hopelessly out of it until she picked up a seven on the second-to-last end. However, Mrs Ryan scored a two on the last end to win by four. Hopes of a local victory now rest with Mrs Kimber and Mrs Sheard. Results. — Second round D. Pizzey (St Albans) 16. E. Moffat (Miramar) 15; S. Fowler (Tawa) 32. M. Hewinson (South
