This 16-month Angora buck sold for the top price of $2400 at the fifth annual sale of Angora goats at Christchurch last week. The buck, named Braemore Fergus 32/81, was bred at the Braemore Angora Stud, Darfield, owned by J. G. and H. E. Gunn, and was bought by A. D. and J. M. Wethey, of Woodend. Pictured with the buck are Mr John Gunn (left), Mr Doug Wethey, and in front, Mrs Heather Gunn. The Braemore Angora Stud was started in 1974 with four does with a Ruakaka Forest Angora background. Two of the original does are still breeding, aged 12 years. The Gunns became interested in Angoras while Mr Gunn was judging Border Leicester sheep at the Royal Melbourne Show in 1974, and they share a close association with the Cora Lynn Stud owned by Murray and Lesley Faulkner, of Springfield. , In 1981 Angoras from the Braemore Stud were sent to the United Kingdom, the first import of goats to that country since 1893. The goats were sent to Mrs Marianna Rosenberg, of Devon, where they are reported to be doing well. Last month one buck, two does and five mixed-sex kids from Braemore and one doe from Cora Lynn were shipped to the Chatham Islands. Mr Wethey runs about 20 does on a part-time basis on his property at Woodend. He bought Braemore Fergus because the mohair is finer than that of his existing flock.
