Pest control review
Agricultural pest control is to be given an in-depth review, the Undersecretary for Agriculture, Mr Austin, has announced "We have made significant progress in bringing agricultural pests under control throughout the country,” Mr Austin said, "and it is an appropriate time to take a close look at where we should be heading for the future.” A review committee had been appointed and would be led by Mr H. A. James, a prominent Wairarapa sheepfarmer and a former chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board. Other members would represent Federated Farmers, the Agricultural
Pests Destruction Council and the Agricultural Research Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Mr Austin said the committee would examine the effects that agricultural pests, primarily the rabbit, were having or were likely to have on primary production and their relationship to land use and management. Then the committee would consider the objectives, structure, effectiveness and efficiency of the pest control movement and recommend any improvements considered desirable. The committee would report in June 1983, he said.
