Hawke pledge on petrol price

NZPA Sydney The Australian Opposition Leader, Mr Bob Hawke, said yesterday that a Labour Government would lower petrol prices as much as 3c a litre if it came to power. Mr Hawke said that the Fraser Government had been wrong to increase the price of oil $3.23 ($4.36) a barrel from January 1 this year. The Government had imposed the oil price rise and then imposed a wage pause. Mr Hawke said that the increase had not been necessary and a Labour Government would reverse the decision, consequently lowering

the price of petrol. A Labour Government would also reduce petrol prices further if world parity dropped. The Fraser Government announced on Tuesday that it would reduce the price of petrol as soon as the price of Saudi Arabian crude fell from SUS 34 a barrel to SUS3O. The Minister for National Energy and Development, Senator John Carrick, said that he was confident the price would drop and said petrol would be about 2c cheaper within six weeks of the price fall.
