Maranui club double
Maranui, of Wellington, completed a double of national interclub water polo championships at QE II Park yesterday. But while the women were barely extended by Avon (Christchurch) in their 14-7 win. the men had many problems with the Christchurch champion men's team, Wharenui.
They were not all in the water, however, for at the conclusion of the game. Wharenui protested that Maranui played a Californian. Don Weber, who was not listed at the commencement of the series.
The protest was rejected, after hearing evidence from the chairman of the Wellington board, and Maranui's 10-7 victory stood. But it was-still a splendid final, even if Maranui was continually just that little bit out of reach of Wharenui. The Christchurch team's problems started when it conceded two goals without reply in the first two minutes, and were compounded with a first quarter scoreline of 4-1.
Thereafter there was nothing between the two teams, with the skills of Paul Dyson and Chris
Jarvis, and the industry of Brent Coates showing out for Maranui: with Wharenui's main strengths lying in the outstanding hole play of John Koens, the hard work of Richard Clark, John Laugesen and Gary Campbell, and a fine goal-keeping display from Mike Godinet.
The women's game was lowkey by comparison, a 6-2 opening burst by Maranui putting an under-strength Avon team — it had only one reserve — right out of the game-.The'Christchurch side did manage to share the second quarter, and it outscored Maranui by a goal in the last quarter, but by then, the result was clear-cut. A third quarter scoreline of 5-1 saw to that. Detailed results.— Men.— Maranui 10 (C. .1. Jarvis 4. A. R. Hesketh, B. Coates, N. Watson all 2). Wharenui 7 (R. A. Clark 3, J. X. Koens 2. G. W.
