Aust, wins cricket
Australia won a rain-short-ened first match in the Benson and Hedges world oneday cricket finals at the Sydney Cricket Ground last night. New Zealand batted first and scored 193 off 49 overs, the Australian bowlers failing to complete their overs at a fast enough rate to bowl the fiftieth in the three and a half hours allocated. However, the umpires waived the $6OO fine. After only four overs of the Australian innings rain interrupted play and the Australian target was shortened to 150 runs in 38 overs. They achieved it for the loss of four wickets and with 4.5 overs to spare. Full report, back page
