Foreign riggers arrive
PA Whangarei ' A crunch point in the bitter “foreign labour” row between unions and the Marsden Point management was reached yesterday with the arrival of 16 British riggers.
The Federation of Labour’s president, Mr W. J. Knox, will address the new arrivals on site at the refinery extension today, and is expected to propound the unions’ stance — that available New Zealand workers must be given first opportunities to be employed on the project.
The men have been housed in the Raeburn single men’s village at Waipu, and could be the advance guard of the 90 overseas riggers authorised by the Arbitration Court. They are to have an induction course at the project before starting work. The F.O.L. has opposed the importation of the riggers in spite of the court's ruling.
