Difficult sale for two-tooths
Two-tooths and aged ewes had a difficult sale at the Kaikoura ewe fair on Monday.
Only the better bred Romneys were keenly sought, and several lines were passed in. Buying was limited because of the drought in North Canterbury and Marlborough. The top lines of Romneys looked excellent buying about $2O. The best price was $2l for two lines of Romneys, one offered by Misses D.. E and M. Aitken, and the other bv D. S. Kennedy.
Last year the top price was $28.80 for Romneys sold by Greenhills. Ltd. which this year received $l9 for its top drafting. Other good Romneys sold from $l7 to $2O with smaller sheep under $l4. Several lines were passed in at $lB to $l9.
A line of well-woolled annual draft Romneys from Greenhills. Ltd. topped the adult section with $l5- Fewother adults made $lO compared with regular sales last year between $lO and $l6.
In contrast to two-tooths and adult ewes, ewe lambs had a more buoyant sale. Coopworth ewe lambs sold to $17.80 and other Coopworth sales were $9 to $l3. Romneys made $9.50 to $l5. The yardings were 3110 two-tooths (3576 last year). 4427 adults (4322), and 940 ewe lambs (1621).
