‘Range of sites’ for smelter
PA Auckland New Zealand Nickel Smelters. Ltd. is talking to a range of possible partners interested in investing in proposed nickel-smelting in the South Island. The managing director of the company, Mr E. J. Smith, said that a Christchurchbased South Island consortium was keen to invest and talks were being held with other interested parties. They included institutions and engineering firms.
Mr Smith said that five sites were being considered for feasibility studies — Bluff, Timaru. Lyttelton. Nelson. and Westport. The Westport proposition had the possibility of using a floating wharf opposite the cement works at Cape Foulwind. Mr Smith said he had had a letter from a Mr J. Neal, of Cable Bay. north of Nelson, objecting on behalf of
residents to the establishment of a nickel smelter and promising political, legal, and social opposition. He said New Zealand Nickel appreciated and shared public concern for the environment. A smelter and its people had to live in a community, too. However, five districts were being considered, he said, and talks would be held with residents in areas it was decided to investigate.
