General forecast: A cold front over central •New Zealand is moving steadily north-east and a shallow ridge of high pressure in the Tasman Sea should spread on to New Zealand. A cold front is expected to be approaching the south-west of the South Island late in the day. Fine or becoming fine in eastern districts and about the Cook Strait area today, but cloudy with a few showers in western areas. More general rain developing in Fiordland tonight. Canterbury: Fine with variable winds.

Marlborough: ■ Moderate north-westerlies predominating with mainly fine weather. Nelson: South-westerlies with mainly fine weather. Buller: South-west winds: cloudy and cool with occasional showers.
