Wellington leads yachting
From JAN CAMPBELL, in Te Anau Wellington and Auckland shared the honours on the second day of the Sanders Cup sailing championship at Te Anau yesterday. All the boats started yesterday morning after repairs to damage received during the previous day’s sailing. Wind conditions caused many frustrations for the yachties. After a late start, the yachts battled for position
for an hour, but after a main wind change from a nor’wester to a southerly, the third race was abandoned. In the afternoon the wind settled down to a reasonable southerly and provided some exciting sailing. The Wellington and Auckland entries started race four with two Race three was restarted after the fourth race with similar wind conditions, but Canterbury. Hawke's Bay and Wellington capsized at
the start of the race but soon made up for lost time. Results — Race 3: Wellington 1, Auckland 2, Southland 3. Canterbury 4, Hawke’s Bay 5, Otago 6. Race 4: Auckland 1. Southland 2, Hawke’s Bay 3. Canterbury 4. Otago 5, Wellington 6. General points: Auckland 9. Wellington 11.7. Southland 22.4, Hawke’s Bay 34.1, Canterbury 38.7. Otago 46.1.
