Danny Frye to ride in special series

PA Hamilton Arrangements have been finalised for the three-race Qantas International apprentice jockey, series next month, to be staged by the Waikato and Matamata Racing Clubs.

The top European apprentices, Billy Newnes (England) and David Parnell (Ireland), who were first and second respectively in Europe last season, will be joined by Noel Barker, Reto Cadalber’t and Chris Kearney, of Austrlia.

In addition. Martin Fry, an English apprentice, who has been riding prominently in New Zealand over the past few weeks, has been invited to. compete in the series. Fry had success over the holidays on Our Friend in a

main handicap at Rotorua, Claremont Wonder at New Plymouth, and Tun Doon in the Stratford Cup.

The riders from New Zealand, who will be participating in the series, with their winning mounts to the end of last month in parentheses, are:

Peter Tims (222), Diane Moseley (178), Maree Lyndon (142), Lance O'Sullivan (88), Danny Frye (91), Rodney Lowry (69). Philip Mercer (61), and Craig Cossell (43). The fields in the special races will be restricted to 14 runners. The races are the Qantas 1600 (class three. 1200 m), at Te Rapa on Saturday, the Qantas International Apprentices’ Race Special (class two, 1600 m) at Te Rapa on February 15, and

the Qantas Handicap (class three, 2030 m) at Matamata on February 19.

The mounts will be drawn by ballot. It was a disappointment to the clubs that the Danish girl, Pernille Hanson, who had indicated a wish to compete in the series, was unable to make the trip because of difficulty in getting a work permit clearance. Barker, Kearney and Cadalbert are all based in New South Wales. Barker is employed in Tommy Smith’s stable. He has ridden in excess of 60 winners and has lost his allowance claim. Cadalbert has had more than 800 rides for 25 metropolitan wins, while Kearney, from 495 mounts, has ridden 31 winners.
