Prison policy

Sir.—l am somewhat startled by Mr P. R. Burdon's assertion that “the three aims of prison policy were rehabilitation, retribution, and revenge" (“The Press," February 4). A .civilised, humane and compassionate society might accept the necessity for rehabilitation, and, perhaps, retribution and reparation — but revenge? What a primitive, Old Testament and un-Christian ring that word has to it. However, Mr Burdon's view of justice is entirely consistent with the Government's attitude to any law which happens to conflict with its political intentions. May we therefore expect to see the concept of revenge enshrined in New Zealand law? — Yours, etc.. J. NGARIMU. February 6, 1983.
