Labour leadership
Sir,—The election of the Labour Party’s new leaders shows clearly the direction the Labour Party is to take — the path back to social democracy. Nothing in the statements by Messrs Lange and Palmer (and by the other contenders) contains any indication that the Labour Party now pays even lip service to the ideals of the labour movement. In spite of a passing resemblance to Aneurin Bevan (minus the copy of “Capital" tucked under the arm) Mr Lange seems by his own statements to be headed for the “bottomless pit of the political centre." The Labour leadership has no interest
whatsoever in the trades union movement which stands for the progressive militancy which has been an essential ingredient of the labour movement for 150 years. The “Labour” Party is, in all but name, the social democrat party. It no longer represents the working people of New Zealand — Yours, etc.,
