Generation ‘complacent on defence’
PA Auckland Commodore Cedric Steward, who will become the Chief of Naval Staff in April, has said that a generation of people had become complacent about defence.
Some people argued that there was no threat to New Zealand and asked why it should bother with defence forces, he said.
Those people did not realise why there was no threat. Such a position resulted from New Zealand’s consistent defence posture, Commodore Steward said.
“It is no good waiting for a threat to emerge. The fact that there is no immediate threat is because we have maintained our stance in' terms of our Armed Forces.
