Fine win by Derby
Special correspondent Dunedin Derby recorded a fine win to reward his army of supporters in the $13,150 T.H.C. four-year-old Championship Final at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday evening. Derby was in the open for much of the race although handy. “He didn’t really get a good run but I didn’t want to get trapped on the fence,” said Richard Brosnan, the trainer-driver of Derby, which has now had seven wins — the last six in succession — and a second from nine starts. Brosnan has no plans for Derby which is raced by Mrs Margaret Grice, of Ashburton, her son, David, of Paua and daughters, Keryn Williams, of Green Island, and Carol Dillion, of Auckland. They have the El Patron — Anna Pavelva gelding on lease'from Keith and Bevan Grice, of Ashburton, cousins
of Margaret’s husband. Keven. Derby carried $23,299 in a win pool of $45)877. Derby began well from 10m and he moved up to the second line in the open after 900 m when Agrinion, moved out to trail him. Winfield Kai forced a strong pace. Derby got in to trail Winfield Kai at the 1400 m when Sistac tangled and came back on Agrinion, which was checked but recovered quickly. Sistac’s front hopple carrier broke, causing him to leave stride.
Derby moved half a sulky width off the trailing position at the 1000 m when Lopez Maefaber improved from the back in the field. Derby joined Winfield Kai in the lead at the 500 m went clear near the 300 m but was immediately tackled by Agrinion. She got to within a neck of Derby, which stayed on gamely to win by a half a length. Ansett ran on for third in a gap of five lengths.
