Stake for Pan Am Mile cut
The stake for the Pan Am Mile to be run by the New Brighton Trotting Club at Addington on February 19, has been reduced by $5OOO to $20,000. The club says the reduction in stake money in the race, plus the dropping of one of the $5OOO Pan Am Consolation Miles, which is to be replaced with another event with a smaller stake, was made for economic reasons. The club said betting figures for the Pan Am Mile had shown a decline since the race was first run in 1973 when $60,240 in win, place quinella and doubles betting
was placed on it. The figure for last year’s race was $47,392. The club could also have problems in attracting top class horses for the event. The New Zealand Metropolitan club will run the $60,000 New Zealand Derby at Addington three days before the race and the $120,000 Auckland Cup will be run a week before the New Brighton club’s event. In addition, several horses, are likely to be kept in Auckland after the cup in preparation for the InterDominions, which start in Auckland in March.
