Ruletta put down

PA Auckland Ruletta had to be destroyed early yesterday morning, 32 hours after a freak accident on leaving the ■ Thames racecourse on Saturday. The four-year-old mare, which won the Red Fox Tavern Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double at Thames, had begun throwing spasmodic fits on Sunday night. Her latest victory was her fourth in only six starts. The accident happened when she was being led across the racetrack from the saddling enclosure to the centre of the course. She took fright at a tractor being driven along an inside training track. The mare reared high, breaking away from two young female attendants, and tumbled over backwards, striking her head on the hard track. She bled from the nostrils and ears. Ruletta was owned by an Auckland racing journalist, Mr Lex Nichols.
