Rebel colonel defies chief
NZPA San Salvador The rebel commander of El Salvador's northern Cabanas province has vowed that he will hold out indefinitely against the Defence Minister, General Jose Guillermo Garcia. Colonel Sigifredo Ochoa Perez announced on Friday that he was no longer following orders from the Ministry of Defence. He told Western journalists that he was protesting against an order transferring him from his
command to a diplomatic post in Uruguay. Calling General Garcia “a little Hitler,” Colonel Ochoa told a news conference that he had won pledges of support from the Salvadorean Air Force, as well as two United States-trained battalions and the people of Sensuntepeque, the capital of Cabanas. As he spoke ; at the military barracks some 500 civilians staged a demonstration in his support at the town’s main square.
