Stony Batter land decision stands
PA Auckland The Land Settlement Board appears to have had the last word on the controversial proposed sale of Stony Batter land on Waiheke Island. No formal objection has been made to the board’s decision last month to retain Stony Batter in public ownership. The board rejected an application by an Auckland businessman, Mr John Spencer. to buy some of the land
surrounding Stony Batter historic gun emplacements and fortifications. The District Commissioner of Crown Lands. Mr John Brent, said yesterday that the period for objections to the board’s decision expired last week. There had been no application for a rehearing by Mr Spencer or anyone else. “The board’s decision stands,” said Mr Brent. "The land will remain in public ownership.”
