Canty fights to bitter end

PA Hamilton One-day cricket of a high standard and the most entertaining variety ended in a storybook finish when Northern Districts beat Canterbury by. a solidary run in their Shell Cup match at Hamilton yesterday. Batting first after winning the toss Northern Districts made good use of a well prepared pitch by running up 248 for' eight. Canterbury fought back magnificently and was all out for 247 from the last ball of the day. Northern's batting was distinguished by a sparkling 93 by Barry Cooper, who played most of the shots in the book and some of his own devising as he gave the Canterbury bowlers treatment they may remember for some time. Cooper was never reluctant to use his feet and some of his driving was superb.

Andrew Roberts, however, in his stylish way, was not to be outdone. He reached his half-century from one fewer delivery than Cooper faced for his.

Northern’s innings was a three-man band, the only other knock of note coming from the captain. John Parker, whose 41 was made with ease and grace and with

a wide range of delicately executed strokes. He looked good for a big score but at 41 was run out.

Easily the best of the Canterbury bowlers was Craig Thiele who in his 10 overs dismissed the openers, Chris Kuggeleijn and Lindsay Crocker, as well as Roger Broughton and Cliff Dickeson, at a cost of 47.

Dempsey, who was twelfth man in the Shell Trophy match which finished at Hamilton on Saturday, sent the visitors’ innings off with a hiss and a roar.

He put bat to ball in power-laden shots in a forthright manner suggesting he wanted to repeat in as brief a time as possible his 104 of Canterbury’s one-day game at Hamilton two years ago.

At 47, scored from 30 balls in 38 minutes, with 10 boundaries, Dempsey was out lbw to the last delivery of the first over from Northern’s new medium-fast bowler, Craig Presland, promoted from the second XI.

The opening stand was worth 68 and soon afterward Canterbury was 79 for one from 10 overs, compared with Northern’s 30 for two at the same stage.

Canterbury’s scoring rate dropped as wickets fell. It reached the stage where to win it needed 70 from 11 overs and four wickets were standing. Responsibility rested on the shoulders of David Stead and he responded well. When he went for 36 that appeared the virtual end of Canterbury.

However, Canterbury’s tail-enders. Stephen Bateman, Dayle Hadlee, Ashley Hart and Thiele, had other ideas about that and so the chase remained on right until the final over from which 11 runs were needed. So it went on until four were needed from the last ball. Thiele responded gallantly with a big hit to mid-wicket but he could not find the boundary and two was all they could manage before Hart was run out. NORTHERN DISTRICTS C.
