Sir.—ln response to Varian J. Wilson, I neither support our National Government nor America, but the system of freely and peacefully electing and ” replacing those who govern us in Parliament — both Government and Opposition. His letter reeks of communist disinformation. Russia first invaded Finland in 1940 before the Germans attacked the Soviet Union. In that year Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia were occupied, and still are. It was America that called Stalin’s bluff over Austria. He wanted it as a communist colony like Poland, Hungary, etc. America did not invade North Korea. It was occupied temporarily after the South was attacked by the North with Russian encouragement and arms. When things went wrong for the latter, they withdrew their support and left the Chinese to take the casualties. — Yours, etc., H. F. NEWMAN. January 6. 1983.

Sir. — I am grateful to correspondents, some “students of history,” who are enlightening readers about Afghanistan on Russia's border. Russia has traditionally been blocked from getting an ice-free port by combined powers. Would there have been a Marixist revolution if Russia had been helped to get one? My limited library shows that Britain had about 81 years interference in Afghanistan with wars in 183842, 1878-80. and 1919. I cannot recall where I read 50 years ago that the League of Nation’s resolution to ban bombing from the air. was vetoed by Britain which was bombing the hill tribes of India.
