Three policemen attacked
PA Auckland A man who allegedly attacked three policemen at a Papatoetoe service station early yesterday was remanded without plea for a psychiatric report when he appeared in the District Court at Otahuhu later yesterday. Michael Robert Ngawiki, aged 30. unemployed, of Papatoetoe. faces seven charges related to a burglary at a service station. He is charged with the burglary of Barton and Thomson, Ltd. He is also charged that he was in possession of an offensive weapon with the intention of committing bodily injury; that he resisted three policemen in the execution of their duty; that he assaulted two policemen with intent to avoid detection and wounded the third; and that he wilfully damaged three windows. An application for bail by Ngawiki’s counsel, Mr W. Brookbanks, was opposed by the police and after a hearing in chambers, Judge
Gillies remanded Ngawiki in custody to January 21 for a psychiatric examination and report.
The policeman who was beaten over the head with the hammer, Constable E. G. Ansell, a dog handler, was in a serious condition in Auckland Hospital last evening.
He underwent surgery yesterday afternoon, and his condition in the hospital's intensive-care unit was described as serious, but stable.
