National softball championships
PA Dunedin A gap in the fence. Jimmv Hall and an error combined to topple Hutt Valley, one of the big three in New Zealand softball, out of the semi-final play-offs in the Rothman’s national men's softball tournament at Logan Park. Dunedin, yesterday. In a day of might-have-beens. Hutt Valley went down to Counties. and then a fired up Canterbury side, to bow out of the top four.
However, for Counties and Canterbury it was a day of celebration as Counties took the third semi-final place behind Wellington and Auckland whilst Canterbury kept alive its hopes of reaching the play-offs with a thrilling 3-2 win in the bottom of the seventh innings against Hutt. The result gave Canterbury the inside running for the final place in the play-offs. North Shore must beat Countries to deny Canterbury its place. Otago wrapped up the top seeding in section B with a 5-0 win over New Zealand Services, its closest rival, and a 2-0 win over Eastern Southland. 1 New Zealand Services and Taranaki have also qualified for
the play-offs to decide which team will be promoted, and North Otago. Mid-Canterbury and South Canterbury are still in contention for the remaining two places. Results from today's matches.—
