Lyle ‘golf personality’

NZPA London A Scotsman, Sandy Lyle, was yesterday named the White Horse golf personality of 1982. Lyle, aged 24, who won the Lawrence Batley tournament last season and finished second to an Australian, Greg Norman, in the European money list, earned the nomination by a one-vote margin from a panel of golf writers.

He narrowly beat a fellow Scot, Gordon Brand Jun. — already named "rookie of the year" with another Scot, Sam Torrance, in third place. The award is restricted to British and Irish players. Lyle was adjudged the winner largely because of his magnificent performance in reaching the final of the Suntory world match play championship at Wentworth in October.
