Auckland beats Otago
PA Auckland Not even a brilliant 108 by Wayne Blair, the Otago No. 4 batsman, could stop Auckland from cruising to a 66run win in the one-day Shell Cup cricket match at Eden Park yesterday. Consistently quick scoring by the Aucklanders, especially John Reid (71), Peter Webb (57), Martin Crowe (52) and John Bracewell . (36). lifted Auckland to 269 for nine wickets in its 50 overs.
With any luck, Otago might have challenged that score, but its recent luck has been largely bad — Otago had to leave out two injured batsmen, Glenn Turner and Richard Hoskin, and so went into the match with only four recognised batsmen, plus Warren Lees and six bowlers.
Still, Wayne Blair played a valiant lone hand for his 108 in 151 minutes from, 143 balls, even if he could not do all the work himself and
keep up the stiff scoring rate which the big Auckland score demanded. Trevor Franklin, the Auckland opening batsman who is in the batting horrors at the monent, made, another quick exit, this time for one to the first ball of the second over. But- Webb and Reid immediately repaired the damage. They watched the bowling closely, for the first five overs brought only four runs, and them they attacked. AUCKLAND T. J. Franklin c Webb b .
