Northern tumbles
PA Wellington Wellington's cricket captain, John Morrison, last night summed up his team's 30-run limited over cricket victory against Northern Districts when he said: “There wouldn’t have been many out there backing us." , When Wellington scored just 110 for eight from its 33 overs, in a match reduced by rain, it looked as though the home side would suffer ignominious defeat at the Basin Reserve in its first round attempt at retaining the Shell Cup. Instead Wellington knuckled down so outstandingly well in bowling and fielding that Northern’s glittering batting array fell for a miserable 80 in 29.1 overs.
It was a margin even Morrison was surprised at as he drew a comparison with Wellington’s splendid 282 in 50 overs against Northern, at Gisborne last summer, which resulted in a win by. only eight runs. He had been aiming at 150 from Wellington’s 33 overs — after heavy morning rain
delayed a start until 1 p.m
While the wicket was unaffected the outfield was still holding, and Wellington's 24 for three at the end of 11 overs made it appear the innings was doomed to failure after Northern's captain. Geoff Howarth, had won the toss. The tempo didn’t greatly improve with the Northern bowlers sticking well to their task, particularly Stu Gillespie, who also fielded with great spirit. The most penetrating Wellington bowler was the right-arm medium-pacer, Steve Maguiness. who had Lindsay Crocket and Howarth caught behind as Northern fell to 9 for three in reply. WELLINGTON R.
