Runabout towed to safety in Sounds

Blenheim reporter

A 6m runabout with three Wellington persons aboard was towed to the safety of Resolution Bay in the Marlborough Sounds last evening after getting into difficulty in Cook Strait. The runabout had set out from Paremata Harbour yesterday morning with another boat, Stingray. Both boats were bound for the Furneaux Lodge tour resort in Marlborough’s Endeavour Inlet. They became separated during the voyage and when the crew of the Stingray reached their destination and discovered the runabout had not arrived they alerted the police.

The runabout was spotted off Cape Koamaru by the lighthouse keeper at Cape Jackson, and the sighting was confirmed by the pilot of a Wellington Aero Club plane that flew to the area from Paraparaumu. Mr Grahame Sowman, of the Resolution Bay resort, soon joined the runabout in his 14m launch Resolution, and towed it to safety. A spokesman for the search and rescue centre in Wellington, Mr Geoffrey Clarke, said that winds up to 30 knots were blowing.
