Labour Party leadership
Sir,—ln the past,- William Richardson has defended the leadership record of Mr Muldoon and the National Party. In repeating this (December 29) he mildly criticises Bill Rowling and implies that he could never have successfully led anyway. Could I ask Mr Richardson how “grasping the nettle and proving leadership” can be reconciled with: insulting Muldoon remarks about other world leaders (notably Australia’s Malcolm Fraser, America’s Jimmy Carter, and Russia’s Leonid Brezhnev); the deliberate division of this country (1981) for political gain and a rugby tour; run-down education, health and social services; record unemployment; continu-
ing double-digit inflation; a foreign debt now exceeding $13,000 million and an internal debt of over $15,500 million? These last two are both six times greater than the figure Mr Muldoon so trenchantly criticised in 1975. With export receipts fortuitously up a solid 260 per cent since 1975, there is no excuse for this appalling record. — Yours, etc.,
M. T. MOORE. December 29. 1982.
