Airport ‘fixtures’ go

Nelson reporter The two converted DC4 Carvair aircraft which Nelsonians had almost accepted as permanent fixtures at Nelson Airport flew to Hamilton on Friday. It was the first stage of their flight to new owners, said to be Snow Aviation, in Hawaii. The two aircraft have been stored in a corner of Nelson Airport for almost three years, thus contributing some - ? 14,000 to the Nelson Regional Airport Authority in ground fees.;'

Before that, the aircraft were ferrying cars round New Zealand and they were virtually grounded when they were not allocated petrol. The aircraft, which are said to use 900 litres of petrol an hour, were given initial overhauls at Nelson last week before they flew to Hamilton.

The aircraft were originally bought by Credit Finance from Ansett in Australia, before coming to New Zealand. Credit Finance, a subsidiary of a London-based Arab bank, paid $850,000 for them.
