Raft expedition postponed again

The annual Rapanui Scout District raft voyage from Redcliffs to Mount Pleasant was postponed yesterday for the second time because of the weather. About 100 rafts were to have taken part in the event, which is now likely to be held in February or March. Mr Tom Prestage, one of the organisers, said that the weather was too cold and wet yestersday afternoon for scouts to be out on the Estuary in makeshift rafts. “It is supposed to be a fun event, and so we did not want the scouts getting cold

and wet in the pouring rain." he said. The organisers had also discovered late on Friday that a water ski-ing race was supposed to be taking place on the Estuary about the same time as the raft expedition. and this had been another factor in the decision to postpone the race until next year, he said. Each raft in the event had been made by the scouts from scrap materials, and would have had a crew of about eight. Sea scouts were to have been on hand in rescue craft.
