Old chamber for new council
Wednesday's meeting of the Canterbury United Council will be held in a chamber that saw debates on the region's early development. United councillors will meet in the historic Canterbury Provincial Council Chambers after being invited by the building’s board. The United Council has statutory functions of regional planning, urban transport planning, civil defence co-ordination and administration of the Summit Road (Canterbury) Protection Act. Its air pollution committee co-ordinates pollution-fight-
ing activities in metropolitan Christchurch. A report on methods to fight unemployment in the region will be on the agenda after this week’s “brainstorming" session among councillors. The United Council normally meets at the Civic Offices building, and it has met once in Rangiora. Its first meeting in the Provincial Council Chambers — the United Council will decide later whether to hold more there — will take place a day after Canterbury's Anniversary Day.
