Denton beats Pfister
NZPA ' Melbourne The big-serving Texan, Steve Denton, still recovering from an illness, yesterday outlasted a fellow American. Hank Pfister, to reach his second consecutive Australian Open men’s tennis singles final. Denton, with his bullet-like serve working only in spurts, overpowered Pfister in five sets in the $450,000 title at Koovong. winning. 6-4. 4-6. 63. 3-6. 7-6.
Pfister was .serving for the match at 5-4 in the final set but Denton managed the critical break to force the tiebreaker. The defending champion, Johan Kriek. of South Africa, eliminated the Australian. Paul McNamee, in five sets in the other semi-final. Kriek won 7-6. 7-6. 4-6, 3-6. 7-5. to set up a replay of last year’s final with Denton.
