Swimming for their lives

The six competitors in the "Swim for your Life” campaign organised by the Christchurch City Council were all smiles after they had completed their 30-min-ute swim at the Centennial Pool on Saturday. From left are Jerry Grocott, George Balani, John Burning, Phil Darkins, John Dunne, and Biff Urquhart. More than 500 people attended the fun day which marked the end of the sixweek “Swim for your Life” campaign. The campaign was to promote swimming as a means of increasing health and fitness. As part of the campaign six people representing three radio stations, television, and two newspapers went on the six-week campaign to show how much their fitness and swimming ability improved. A competition was run in conjunction with the campaign whereby people had to

estimate the combined distance the six people swam. On Saturday the six contestants swam a combined total of 6426 metres with Grocott swimming 771 m, Balani 1293 m, Burning 715 m. Darkins 1197 m. Dunne 1133 m and Urquhart 1217 m. The City Council will announce the winners during the week.
