Era comes to an end
.The South Islands first community policeman. Constable Charles' Ribbins, retired yesterday. ■ Constable Ribbins had been Papanui's "own" policeman for nine years, and his retirement was marked by cards from neighbourhood children and gifts from shopkeepers. He started his long police career in Kenya after World
War II when he was seconded to the' force. He returned to England and was a London "bobby" for several years before emigrating to join relatives in New Zealand. He served at Akaroa and Blenheim, and in Christchurch before his appointment in 1974 - as the South Island’s first community policeman.
