Another brief bout
NZPA-Reuter London Frank Bruno, "the great black hope" of British heavyweight boxing, extended his brief professional career by a further 40 seconds when he stopped a Costa Rican, Gilbert Acuna, in one round yesterday. Bruno, aged 21, has now won all 10 bouts despite having fought less than 17 rounds. Acuna is something of a “knockout specialist" himself — he has now been stopped
in the first round in three of his last four contests. The Costa Rican, who lives in Britain, was sent to the canvas for a count of four by a right to the chin — the only punch of the bout — and although he staggered to his feet the referee, Harry Gibbs, moved in to signal the quick end. The Royal Albert Hall crowd shouted their disapproval but Mr Gibbs said: “I would rather have the booing than a fatality on my conscience."
