Forests suffer little damage
Canterbury State forests escaped last Fridays gale with little damage. The Assistant Conservator of Forests in Canterbury. Mr J. Barber, said that the' Forest Service was “agreeably surprised" at the lack of extensive damage caused by winds which rivalled the strength of the big gale of August 1, 1975. About 60ha of radiata pine at Balmoral State forest and about lOha at Hanmer State forest were damaged. Other Canterbury forests suffered little or no losses. Recoverable timber would be milled after a final assessment of the damage was completed.
