Cycling cups for Steele, Fowler

Befitting two Commonwealth Games medal-winners, and the outstanding performers of the open track cycling season. Murray Steele and Brian Fowler won a cup apiece in the first Cup Night at Denton Park. Fowler won his trophy with a storming finish in the 1600 m handicap race, for the Percy Cole Cup, thus depriving Steele of an unprecedented hat-trick of victories.

The loser had his revenge in the Four Square Cup race, an 8000 m scratch event, when he came perfectly off Terry Gyde's lead-out and just held off Fowler, finishing very fast again. But that was Fowler's onlyreal setback, for he won the 1000 m convincingly, and sprinted far too consistently to brook any opposition in the points race. There were two other multiwinners. Craig Nichols marked his first outing of the season with two tight B grade wins from Craig Fenton, while the novices, Wayne Eyre (A grade) and John O'Brien (B grade) also each had two victories.
