Club’s Colours may recapture winning form tonight

By

ALEX McMILLAN

Club's Colours has proved rather costly to his army of loyal supporters lately, but from his favourite No. 8 box draw is presented with a great chance to atone in the Couplands Stakes (class 5), the first leg of the T.A.B. concession double at the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park this evening. • His inability to finish closer than third in his most recent appearances on the track has been attributable, to a large extent, on interrupted passages. The Meth-ven-trained son of Kim's Mint and Petite Koala has invariably found himself faced with insurmountable tasks after the first bend, but

has always been doing his best work over the closing stages. This was never more evident than in the New. Zealand championship final on November 19, when he unwound a whirlwind burst to finish a close third, a mere length from the winner. Arkarita. The current track'record holder for 560 m — a feat he achieved from box No. 8 last season — Club’s Colours is opposed by a useful field here and this race should be every bit as entertaining as the championship final itself. Arkarita flew the traps in that event and never flinched under extreme pressure to record a handsome victory. She has secured an identical box draw here (No. 2) and seems certain to start favourite. '' ' Charlie’s Irish was eliminated from the championship final, but demonstrated his class when he annihilated a class 3 middle distance field at his last start, clocking 34.015, the same time posted by Arkarita in the final. From the “ace" draw. he could upset this field at false odds, while the consistent She’s a Friendly always has to be accorded the utmost respect. The second leg of the T.A.B. double, the $lOOO Lord Shannon Cup (class 3), has attracted a fine field, but perhaps .the best chance could be the North Island visitor, Blue Pearl, which should be entrusted with favouritism. In the care of the wellknown Central Districts trainer, Owen Marron, the Australian-bred Blue Pearl ran out a very impressive winner of her heat and with the likelihood of further improvement — it was her first start on the track — she should have the edge on her southern rivals. A diminutive daughter of Fast Sapphire and Our Speed Queen, Blue Pearl has compiled an attractive record in her brief career to date, her winning sequence being interrupted when she was fourth in Lucy Havoc’s Well-

ington Oaks before embarking on her . southern campaign. Silent Slitrig and Tudor Free look the main dangers from inside draws, but with a reasonable run from box No. 4. Misty Isle could outfinish them all. The fields are: T.A.B.
