Appeal over conviction
PA Hamilton An Auckland man found guilty last month of raping a young woman at Koromatua has appealed against the conviction. The man, a detached social worker, aged 40, was convicted in the High Court at Hamilton on October 14 on one charge of raping the young woman, then aged 18, and one of rendering her unconscious to avoid detection on October 16, last year. He was .found guilty before Mr Justice Prichard by a jury of four woman and eight
men after a second trial. At the first trial the jury failed to reach a verdict. He was sentenced to seven years jail for the rape and two years jail oh the second charge. The appeal has been lodged with the Court of Appeal at Wellington to be heard before three judges. The date for the hearing has not yet been set. The man’s name was suppressed during the trial and the Judge also ordered that it remain suppressed when the case ended.
