Rapist apologised to complainant
PA Auckland A man sentenced to two years in prison after admitting a charge of rape, had gone with his family to apologise to the woman concerned, the High Court at Auckland heard yesterday. Jack Haru, aged 21, a boner, of Pukekohe, had pleaded guilty to a charge of raping a woman on June 27 this year. He appeared before Mr Justice Sinclair for sentence. Haru’s lawyer, Mr R. S. Chambers, said Haru came from a family with strong church ties, and after his arraignment, Haru and his
family had gone to the woman, sat with her . and ',’; apologised to her for what '• had happened. Haru was in stable employment and was well re- . garded by his employer, Mr ' " Chambers said. After the incident Haru had discussed the situation with his family and they then went to their local minister. The minister then got in touch with the police. Mr Chambers asked his Honour to take into account » the approach that was made to the police, Haru’s admission, his family disciplines ~ and his unsolicited apology to the complainant.
