Leilani foals to Sir Tristram
PA Masterton , The former champion race mare, Leilani, produced a filly foal to the boom stallion, Sir Tristram, at Ardsley Stud, Masterton, yesterday.
The Weraiti ■. breederowner, Mr lan Macßae, said he would probably race the brown filly himself. “I couldn’t find any faults with her and Leilani’s just a picture of health,” he said. The Sir Tristram filly is Leilani’s third foal, the others being a colt by Silver Dream, Silver Lei, which is racing well in Australia, and an unraced filly by In The Purple, Paulownia, being trained at Matamata.
Leilani, by Oncidium from the Summertime mare, Lei,
won 14 races and $270,870 in stakes during an illustrious career which saw her win the 1974 Caulfield Cup and run second to Think Big in the Melbourne Cup the same year. She was trained by Bart Cummings for Andrew Peacock and lan Rice, the same connections of Silver Lei.
The Cambridge-based Sir Tristram is the sire of the big race winners Gumer’s Lane, Grosvenor, Cossack Prince, Dalmacia, Sovereign Red and Queen’s Road in Australia, and Noble Heights and Trissaro in New Zealand. An offer of $3O million for the stallion has been turned down.
