Worldly Mist to contest Avondale Gold Cup
From ROSS DIXON Greymouth The Tuahiwi mare. Worldly Mist, confirmed a start in the $70,000 Avondale Gold Cup on December 15, when she convincingly won the Greymouth Cup, the first leg of the T.A.B. double, at the Greymouth Jockey Club’s meeting at Omoto yesterday. The trainer, Ray Harris, said after the race that yesterday’s. win should ensure a sufficient rise in the weights
to guarantee the mare a start in the 2200 m event. After settling in the trail behind the pacemaking Stead. Worldly Mist was lucky to clear the rails before the hot favourite, Streetem, gave ground from the 400 m. Once in the straight, the rider, Tane Matthews, switched the Balios mare to the outside and took full advantage of the better conditions to win by a length
and a half from the boldfinishing Double March, with a long neck back to the Hokitika winner, Keyman. Harris completed a most successful day when an outsider. Lover Boy. rounded off a stable double by scoring an all-the-way win in the second leg, the Gordons Gin Handicap. His stabiemate. Decor Doll, produced an outstanding performance to run second after missing the
start badly. The win favourite. Jane Again, settled back and fought on well for third. The win gave the Rangiora high school student, Hunter Thomas, aged 16, his second winning ride. He was successful with another outsider, Lampray, on the first day of the meeting. The youngster, who has had only 10 rides, will return to high school next year, while continuing his association with the Harris team.
