Tattooing planned for spayed tabby cats

PA Nelson Spayed tabbv-cats might sport tattoos in future, if a scheme to be tested in the Nelson district proves its usefulness.

A pilot plan, by the society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in association with veterinarians at Nelson. Stoke, and Richmond, aims to identify spayed strays with a small tattoo inside one ear.

"Such a mark, will not mutilate or discolour and will not even show unless the ear is carefully inspected by turning it inside out . . . gently, of course,” said an S.P.C.A. spokesman. The benefit would be mainly for the purpose of identifying the cat should it stray. "Cats go missing every day. If they are not reclaimed every effort is made to find them "a new home. If the cat is a female it is almost impossible to know if she has been spayed. ‘‘Sometimes exploratory surgery is necessary to sort this out, which means unnecessary stress on the animal and expense for the new owner. The tattoo would avoid all this." If the trial is a success in Nelson, both S.P.C.A. and the New Zealand Veterinary Association would have to see it introduced for the rest of New Zealand, the spokesman said.
