Abortion clinic
Sir,—These pro-abortionist arguments (November 26) disturb me. T. Moon's stand protects “the life and happiness of all” except the foetus. Does it not enter her definition? B. Roberts sees the baby’s need for care both before and after b'rth to live, but does not see thut this eliminates any distinction between “actual” and “potential” life. Life is always and only “actual.” It is never “fanatical,” R. Dalziel, for civil law to protect the divinely grant’d privilege of life that nobooy has the right to take away. . Wilkinson would undersianc the Catholic Church’s stand if he could see the sanctity of all life in God’s eyes. The Church is sometimes wrong, but far more often right. Only J. Hay raises a valid point; do we choose selfishly killing an unwanted foetus or callously neglecting an unwanted child? As best as possible, we choose neither. Sir,—ln reply to Alan Wilkinson (November 26), the question of when human life begins is not a moral question but a biological one. It is medical science that authoritatively states that human life begins at conception. The most distinguished scientific meeting in recent times to consider this question in depth was the first international conference on abortion held in Washington D.C. in October 1967. It brought
together authorities from around the world in the fields of medicine, law, ethics and the social sciences. Its conclusive finding was that human life began at conception. The Catholic Church in fulfilling its role of upholding the dignity of human life teaches that from conception life should be reverenced as a gift from God and that the dignity of the unborn is neither conferred nor taken away by any man or woman or by any government. To deny the truth of the humanity of the unborn, from conception to permit its killing is' an error.— Yours, etc., K. ORR. November 28, 1982.
