Concerto contest
Sir, — A wide public in Christchurch and all over New Zealand will be shocked by the Arts Council’s threatened withdrawal of its support for the Christchurch National Concerto Competition. What can possibly ■ be in their collective mind? Perhaps they think that the TV Young Musicians competition will take the place of the concerto competition. Not only is there ample room for both but the TV competition has ■ obvious drawbacks. Can a local judge really be impartial with ■. a $16,000 prize at stake? The Christchuurch Civic Music Council has never made this mistake. Over the years they have built nip a well-run competition which has given many distinguished young performers their start. The Arts Council is apparently prepared to scupper this achievement. But at the same time it is prepared'to give $13,000 to Mita Films to make a political film. Something is very wrong here. And once more, the South Island gets hit. — Yours, etc., HELEN GARRETT, Christchurch City Council representative on the Civic Music Council , executive. November 25, 1982. .
