Ice communication cut
Communications between New Zealand and the Antarctic have been cut for about three days, disrupting all flights to the continent. The communications officer of the United States Naval Support Force, Antarctica. Lieutenant D. D. Fite, said in Christchurch yesterday that the problem was caused by a combination of solar and geomagnetic activity. “It could clear at any time, but usually lasts for three to five days." Lieuten-
ant Fite said. The interference has cleared several times, but only for a few hours—not long enough to allow flights. The information officer in the Antarctic Division of the D.5.1.R., Mr K. O. Clegg, said the division had managed to send three telex messages yesterday morning. The main inconvenience, was in the disruption of flights. Lieutenant Fite said that similar disturbances normally occurred several times each season.
